Winter car check: battery, antifreeze and more
The most common cause of breakdowns in winter is a weak battery. Closely followed by insufficient antifreeze, frozen washer nozzles, and worn wiper blades. The good news: almost all of this can be avoided with a quick check.
What is included in the winter check
- Battery: Cold weather significantly reduces performance. If your battery is already a few years old, it should be tested before winter.
- Coolant: Antifreeze protection must be sufficient for the lowest expected temperatures.
- Windscreen washer system: Fill with winter screenwash so nozzles and hoses don't freeze up.
- Wipers and lights: Clear visibility is even more critical in winter.
- Tyres: Tread depth, age, and pressure – tyre pressure drops in the cold.
- Door seals and locks: Well-maintained rubber seals won't freeze shut.
- Heater and air conditioning: Air conditioning dries the air and prevents misted windows – keep it on in winter, too.
Ideal combination: winter check alongside your wheel change
If your car is already with us for a wheel change, we can conveniently carry out the winter check at the same time. This saves you a second appointment. Simply select the winter check add-on service in our wheel change form.
Winter essentials to keep in your car
Ice scraper, hand brush, gloves, a blanket, jump leads, and a torch. If driving into the mountains, snow chains are essential too – and remember to practice fitting them beforehand.
