Switching to Winter Tyres: When Is the Right Time?
The first chilly nights often arrive sooner than expected. As soon as temperatures permanently drop below seven degrees, summer tyres noticeably lose their grip. It is definitely time to think about changing your wheels.
What does the law say?
In Austria, situational winter tyre regulations apply to passenger cars from 1 November to 15 April: whenever winter road conditions prevail—such as snow, slush, or ice—winter tyres must be fitted. Alternatively, snow chains on at least two drive wheels are permitted, but only if the road surface is continuously or almost continuously covered with snow or ice.
How much tread does a winter tyre need?
For a radial tyre to be legally recognized as a winter tyre, it requires a minimum tread depth of 4 mm. Our recommendation: check the age of your tyres during the swap as well. The DOT number on the sidewall indicates the week and year of manufacture. Older tyres harden and lose traction, even if there is still sufficient tread left.
